BMPs Unchained - Thinking Outside the Box

Description:

Best management practices (BMPs), as listed in stormwater management manuals are typically product or material based, such as silt fence or erosion blankets. These can be effective when designed, installed, and maintained appropriately.

However, by “thinking outside the box,” many more BMPs options become available. These BMPs are often less material-based and more procedural or administrative. They are pro-active and help reduce environmental risk; and they often require communicating with the construction contractor, working within their “means and methods.” 

Procedural examples include keeping vehicles on existing asphalt during earthwork operations and “grouting” stormwater infrastructure as soon as possible. An administrative example is construction contract specifications-clear, concise, and understandable to the contractor.

This presentation gives examples and provides ideas that will benefit designers, inspectors, regulators, and contractors.
