Canadian Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CAN-CISEC)

The Canadian Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CAN-CISEC) is a certification program offered by The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and CISEC Inc. Professionals with two or more years of sediment and erosion control construction and/or storm water pollution prevention field experience may qualify to become a CAN-CISEC. Those with less than two years experience may qualify to become a CAN-CISEC IT (in training).

ESCA BC hosts TRCA and CISEC's one and a half day training course to prepare for the CISEC or CISEC IT exam. The course covers roles and responsibilities, background information, inspecting best management practices, regulations and compliance, and conducting construction site inspections.  Participants will have the opportunity to take part in classroom exercises reviewing ESC plans and reports. Upon completion of the training course, participants have the option of writing either one of three exams.

  • Level 1 exam is for those having less than two years of sediment and erosion control and/or storm water inspection experience seeking a CAN-CISEC In Training (IT) designation.
  • Level 2 exam is for existing CAN-CISEC IT registrants seeking to sit for the second portion of the IT exam, having now fulfilled all application qualifications.
  • Level 3 exam is for those having at least two years of sediment and erosion control and/or storm water inspection experience seeking a full CAN-CISEC designation.

The course is open to anyone, while registration for the Level 2 & 3 certification exam requires pre-approval by CISEC, Inc.  To be approved for the exam, participants must complete an application form illustrating that they have a minimum of two years experience related to erosion and sediment control inspections and have participated in at least one other ESC training initiative in the last four years.  Three letters of reference are also required.

Review CAN-CISEC course manual, which is also provided in hard copy to course registrants.

Please note that ESCA BC hosts the courses in British Columbia, but all registration is through TRCA.

Fees: $500

Applications are processed through TRCA's Sustainable Technologies program. CAN-CISEC-IT (in training) applications can be made at any time prior to the course. Level 2 or Level 3 CAN-CISEC applications must be received three weeks in advance of the course or exam.

See CISEC International and TRCA's Sustainable Technologies Program for more information. For course dates in British Columbia, see our homepage.
